In this case, the discharge is carried out in a chemically inert gas, usually argon.

Two types of metallization can be considered:

• deposition of one metal on another;

• deposition of a metal on an insulator.

For the former, studies show that, whatever the deposit-substrate pair, adhesion is excellent. Industrial applications include aluminum anticorrosion coatings. Other applications are being developed in the field of electrical equipment (e.g. electrical contacts).
