1. Materials and processes for metal packaging
Metal packaging has been used in the canning industry since the early 19th century (see box). However, before tackling the specific field of organic coatings, it would be useful to present the technical context and therefore the various types of metallic materials, as well as the forming and assembly processes used in the food industry.
Two main families are used: steel (tinplate or chromium-plated iron) and aluminum.
