Thermal Methods Used in Chemical Process Safety

There are many types of data used in a process safety study. Here are some examples:

• enthalpy of reaction ;

• enthalpy of secondary reactions ;

• mass heat capacity ;

• adiabatic temperature rise ;

• the temperature of first exotherm ;

• adiabatic runaway time; etc.

Measuring these data can require a considerable effort, even though not all these quantities are necessarily useful in all cases. It is therefore important to use a systematic approach that limits the experimental effort to the data required to solve the problem at hand.
