The main objective of this section is to establish the fundamental safety requirements for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems. It defines the specific hazards associated with refrigeration systems and proposes safety solutions based on a classification of refrigerants and systems.

EN 378-1 provides clear definitions of technical terms to avoid ambiguity and ensure a common understanding of important concepts throughout Europe. These definitions include terms such as :
