5. Assessing Uncertainties in the BEGES Calculation

Any GHG inventory involves uncertainties inherent in the quality of the input data and the methodological assumptions used. It is essential to be aware of these uncertainties in order to interpret the results correctly and avoid false precision.

There are three main sources of uncertainty.

  • Activity data constitute the first source. Energy consumption data from properly calibrated meters have a low uncertainty (on the order of 1 to 2%), but certain data are estimated or reconstructed—–, production volumes, quantities of refrigerants recharged, supplier data– —and may have uncertainties ranging from 10 to 30%.

  • Emission factors represent the second source. The values from the Base Carbone® database themselves are accompanied by confidence intervals. The emission factor for French electricity...
