7. Thermal performance
The thermal performance of a transfer line is estimated by the sum of the thermal losses of the internal supports and the radiation losses of the insulation. The vacuum in the intermediate wall means that there is no convective heat loss.
Heat flow through insulation is obtained by measurement and feedback. This flow depends on the type and number of insulation layers, the temperature gradient and the quality of insulation installation.
The heat flux for 10 layers of aluminum/glass-fiber insulation between +20°C and – 196°C averages 2 W/m

. It can reach 1 W/m
2
with 30 layers of insulation.
