1. Context

Stereology is a branch of mathematics, specifically geometry, associated with probability theory. The term "stereology" was proposed in 1961 and established in 1963 when the International Society for Stereology was founded .

The origins of stereology go back to the 17th century in England with Newton (1664-1666) and Halley (1693), then to the 18th century in France with Buffon (1733) (cf. Buffon's needle problem)
