    Overview

    ABSTRACT

Stereology deals with the quantitative estimation of geometric information in Euclidean n-dimensional spaces with n ? 1 from spatial sampling with dimensions strictly less than n, resulting from sections, and measurements by intersections or (and) projections. This article presents a synthesis of the basics of stereology, mainly in dimensions n = 2 or 3. It first presents the methodology, the terminology, and the two dual approaches of stereology. The three main types of objects are then specified. The stereological functional properties and main formulas connecting them are then set out, ranging from classical to most modern. Some information on spatial sampling and statistical estimation is provided, and counting methods are presented in detail.

     INTRODUCTION

The scientific and technological literature on Stereology is fairly extensive, but is relatively inaccessible for three main reasons: it is scattered across numerous journals and several books from a variety of disciplines; the mathematical aspects are only partially covered, with notations that are often unusual and concepts that are insufficiently, if at all, explained , and the vocabulary is generally not sufficiently precise and explicit.

As a result, this article is the result of a major editorial and notational effort that facilitates comprehension, but makes some sentences rather "loaded".

Readers are advised to take a preliminary look at the AF216 article on stochastic geometry.
