1.1 Role and definition

There is no real consensus on the definition and role of supervision.

Manufacturers often equate this operation with the monitoring of variables, triggering threshold alarms with dedicated software (Panorama, Intouch, Labview, Dspace...). These software packages are dedicated to process control and real-time information gathering from remote sites, with a view to controlling equipment.
