1. The notion of risk

We have used the terms "danger" and "risk", which are common in everyday language, but whose meaning is not always well known. Here are the definitions we propose for these two terms.

A "hazard" is a situation, condition or practice that has the potential to cause damage to people, property or the environment.

Risk" is the possibility of damage resulting from exposure to a hazard. Risk is the component of two parameters: "severity" and "probability". The greater the severity and probability of an event, the greater the risk.
