5. Risks of counterfeit products and protection measures

We also need to be aware of the many safety risks inherent in this new technology. 3D printing is a potential vector for non-compliance with safety standards. To limit legal risks, a number of technical solutions can be put in place, including the integration of markers, the use of technical protection measures (Digital Rights Management: DRM) and so on. In addition, companies whose products feature a well-known brand or look may be particularly at risk: an increasingly common practice in workshops and on 3D printing sites is for a user to print a mobile accessory bearing the logo of the device for which it is intended. 3D printing must also be an integral part of a company's marketing strategy, which can rely on trademark protection to guarantee the quality and authenticity of its products to consumers.
