3. Packaging subject to ecodesign

Ecodesign is a legal obligation that comes into play at the beginning of the packaging life cycle, with the aim of preparing for the end of the packaging's life when it becomes waste.

  • Start of life cycle

    As soon as an article meets the definition of packaging or packaging component explained below, it must be eco-designed in accordance with the environmental requirements set out in chapter 5, whatever the packaging waste: whether it is used and then discarded by industry, commerce, offices, administrations or households, and whatever the materials of which it is made (Dir. 94/62, art. 2).

  • End of life cycle

    Directive 94/62 does not impose common rules on Member States for the reprocessing of packaging waste: the organization of packaging waste collection...
