6. Conclusion

The proliferation of research into cross-modal correspondences in recent years has enabled us to gain a better understanding of these mechanisms inherent in our brain's functioning. Although further studies are still needed to identify the precise cortical pathways involved in the complex processing of sensory information, it has now been demonstrated that any response to a stimulus is indeed multi-sensory. The development of brain imaging techniques, and the use of new tools such as eye tracking, will enable us to refine our hypotheses as to the very nature of these phenomena.

Even if the models favoring an acquired or innate determinism are still contradictory, our knowledge is progressing, as is the case with the link between odors and colors.
