 INTRODUCTION

This article is specifically devoted to maintainability and maintenance. However, maintainability is so closely linked to reliability and availability that we'll have to talk briefly about these two characteristics.

While maintainability reduces the duration and cost of breakdowns, reliability reduces their frequency. By choosing an appropriate maintenance policy, both aim to increase the availability of systems or equipment, and reduce maintenance costs and spare parts inventories.
