Material removal using cutting tools is a highly complex machining process that is not well mastered. In particular, the physics of the cut is strongly controlled by the orientation of the folds in the composite material, the tool geometry and the cutting parameters.

In the case of composites, many authors have studied the influence of cutting parameters (depth of cut, cutting speed, etc.) and fiber orientation in a composite sheet on material removal mechanisms.
