10. Polycondensation techniques

Polycondensations are performed in a melt, in solution, in suspension or using interfacial techniques.

10.1 Mass polycondensation

Most industrial polycondensations are carried out in a melt between 120 and 280 ˚C, or even at higher temperatures in an inert atmosphere, provided the monomers and polymer are thermally stable. Small quantities of diluent may also be added.

It is important to note that in polycondensation :

  • the viscosity of the reaction medium is high only in the final stages of the reaction;

  • the temperature rise due to the heat of reaction is generally moderate, as most of this heat is released in the early stages of the reaction, when the...
