7. Grafting and cross-linking

Polymer grafting involves attaching poly-B macromolecular blocks to a poly-A macromolecular backbone. The result is poly(A-g-B) graft copolymers.

Crosslinking corresponds to the establishment of covalent bonds between linear chains, leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network. When the link is provided by a macromolecular segment, the operation can be likened to bifunctional grafting.

Grafting and crosslinking of preformed linear macromolecules therefore involve similar techniques: chemical, photochemical and radiochemical.

However, cross-linked polymer structures are frequently obtained by chain polymerization of monomers or oligomers carrying several polymerizable functions.
