3. Conclusion
The 2014 ATEX Directive updated the regulatory requirements relating to the safety of ATEX-certified equipment placed on the European market. This provides the European Union with a high level of protection for the internal market. However, much work remains to be done to raise awareness among employees at the sites concerned about the safe repair, maintenance, and commissioning of ATEX equipment and devices. In this regard, the 2016 version of NF EN 60079-10-1 optimizes the ATEX zone classification of a site, thereby reducing the cost of installing equipment. The technical specification IEC TS 60079-44, relating to the competence of persons in explosive atmospheres, published in November 2023, provides a clear reference framework for the expected skills and assessment criteria for personnel operating in ATEX zones.
