5. How do you classify waste?

5.1 If the composition of the waste is known

When the composition of a waste is known, the usual ADR rules apply.

Waste containing a single material is classified in the same way as the original product, provided its hazard characteristics remain the same.

Example: acetone became waste: UN1090 WASTE Acetone, 3, II, (D/E).

Empty uncleaned packagings are considered as full packagings and classified in the same way. Only their official designation changes, in accordance with § 5.4.1.1.6.2.1.

Example: soiled paint cans (UN1263 PAINTS, 3, II, [D/E]): EMPTY PACKAGING, 3.

Wastes containing several materials are assigned to the collective N.S.A. (not otherwise specified)...
