3.1 Reducing hazard potential
Before going any further with the preliminary risk analysis (PRA), it is necessary to reduce hazard potential at source. This involves four principles:
substitution principle: a dangerous product is replaced by a less dangerous one;
principle of intensification: reducing the volume of equipment;
Mitigation principle: less dangerous process parameters are defined (lower temperature or pressure);
limitation principle: equipment is designed to reduce the impact of an accidental event.
