5. Examples of solutions
Fault tolerance mechanisms and formal methods are among the technical solutions proposed to reduce the criticality of scientific and technical systems. Some of these solutions are presented here.
5.1 Fault tolerance mechanisms
Programming techniques provide designers with special techniques that enable programmed systems to be reactive in the event of failure. These techniques can be used in FMEAs as safety barriers to prevent certain component failure modes from producing the feared system effects.
The techniques most often used at the design level are the so-called N-version programming or overlay block techniques.
