7. Analysis procedure for lightning protection systems and high-intensity radiated fields (L/HIRF)

7.1 Objectives

The objectives of maintenance on L/HIRF high-intensity lightning and radiated-field protection systems are to reduce the possibility that the occurrence of a single failure or common-mode failure on redundant L/HIRF track elements could have an impact on airworthiness. To this end, the susceptibility to degradation caused by environmental deterioration and/or accidental damage of each element of the L/HIRF systems is analyzed.

Maintenance tasks for L/HIRF systems are developed as part of aircraft type certification and form part of the MRB report. Using logical analysis, the working group determines the applicable and effective maintenance tasks and their frequencies according to the consequences of protection system failures.
