4. What are the consequences of toxic liver damage?

Toxic liver damage is characterized by a sharp increase in liver biomarkers in the blood:

  • isolated or predominant increase in transaminases, particularly ASpartate-AminoTransferase (ASAT);

  • increased alkaline phosphatase ;

  • isolated increase in Gamma-GlutamylTransferase (GGT).

Liver damage also leads to structural changes in the liver, visible on histological examination.

4.1 Acute exposure to ethanol
