The cultivation of halophytic plants is an increasingly studied and developed approach to meeting the challenges posed by growing soil and water salinity in many parts of the world. Since halophytes are plants that evolve and thrive in coastal saline environments and arid lands, their cultivation can be a promising solution for the rehabilitation of salinized ecosystems, biomass production (for food or feed, biofuels, parapharmaceuticals...) and water management. Pioneering work showed that halophytes could grow very well and produce large quantities of biomass in a variety of soils and regions
