3.1 Fields of application
Like traditional plant biomass, which is now opening up a range of applications far beyond food, notably through the growing application of green chemistry principles, microalgae offer potential in a wide variety of fields. Table 2 and figure 6 give a non-exhaustive list of the uses currently identified, citing the main species concerned and the industrial players in the field. The main applications are detailed below.
