5. Conclusion

Membrane bioreactors are now an industrial reality: over 300 installations in Europe, with an average increase of 40 new installations per year in recent years, 2/3 of which treat industrial waste and 1/3 domestic waste.

In all cases, for a comparable volumetric load, BAM offers superior overall purification performance, notably due to its total retention of suspended solids.

This originality gives the BAM an undeniable advantage in terms of the low turbidity of the water produced and the high level of germ elimination, making it possible to reuse treated water directly and to combine finishing operations sensitive to the presence of TSS or even organic matter in the water, such as UV oxidation or chlorination, with the elimination of ionic compounds or targeted molecules by ion exchange, nanofiltration or reverse osmosis.
