2. Sorption pump or adsorption pump

Normative definition: "A fixation pump in which the gas is mainly fixed by the physisorption of a substance with a large real surface area (e.g. a porous surface)."

2.1 Principle

Some porous materials such as activated carbon, zeolites and silica gel have very large specific surface areas (surface area developed per unit mass of the solid substance) ranging from several hundred square metres per gram to over a thousand [5][6] .
