1. Role of a vacuum pump

A vacuum pump is, by definition (standard NF X 10-501), "a device for creating, improving or maintaining a vacuum". It is therefore a machine capable of extracting gaseous molecules from a reservoir and evacuating them either into the ambient air, or into another reservoir.

The origin and nature of these molecules can vary widely depending on the application.

In other words, a vacuum pump must be capable of lowering the pressure in a tank, since pressure is proportional to the number of gaseous molecules present in the tank. Pressure is also temperature-dependent, and depending on temperature, liquids with high vapor pressure and easily sublimable substances may also need to be taken into account.

The vacuum pump must be able to draw in a certain flow, compress it and discharge it at a pressure higher than the suction...
