5. Assemblies for the steel industry

Let's start with the general layout of a steel mill gearbox.

Figure 19 shows a schematic diagram of a reducer used to control steel mill rolls.

We see the main motor, the main gearbox, the pinion cage with a 1/1 ratio and a center distance equal to the center distance of the two controlled cylinders.

Figure 20 a shows a conventional rolling mill gearbox from the 1980s, with gears made of high-strength alloy steels, but not surface-hardened. It weighs 80 tonnes. Power ranges...
