6. Gearboxes for rolling stock

Gearboxes are found on most rolling stock: cars, coaches, trucks, tractors, etc. They come in a wide range of types and numbers. The number and type of gearboxes are extremely varied. They are generally linked to internal combustion, gasoline or diesel engines.

Here are just two examples of the many gearboxes available:

• classic parallel gearbox (figure 21 a );

• planetary gearbox, possibly automatic (figure 21 b ).
