1. Construction and operating principle of a mechanical seal

It's useful to start this article by recalling the main components of a mechanical seal. However, it is advisable to consult [BM5425] for a comprehensive description of the different types of mechanical seal.

Figure 1 shows the main components of a mechanical seal. Sealing is ensured by the interface between the rotor and stator, linked to the machine shaft and housing respectively. These two rings offer flat, smooth surfaces, with possible grooves, to ensure a good level of sealing....
