4. Stochastic finite elements and industrial problems

This section begins by highlighting some of the mechanical issues for which the stochastic finite element method can bring additional precision to the design of a more robust and reliable product, and introduces a few tools. It then analyses in detail an application developed by Phimeca Engineering.

4.1 Some challenges

Mastering uncertainty in mechanical design relies first and foremost on the rules and regulations that codify know-how, and on quality assurance for the entire design, manufacturing and maintenance process. The stochastic approach is a "plus" that helps guide the process by selecting the factors of importance that condition performance. Here are just a few examples:
