1. Abrasive properties

An abrasive is a hard crystallized body capable, by mechanical action, of cutting chips from a softer body. It is characterized by its mechanical properties, physico-chemical stability, shape and dimensions.

1.1 Mechanical properties

In the case of abrasion work, hardness and fracture resistance are of particular interest.

  • Hardness: this concept is characterized by the ability of one body to scratch another. Two scales are used to classify abrasives according to their hardness (table 1 ).
