5. Bonded superabrasives

Diamond and CBN (cubic boron nitride) abrasives are often referred to as superabrasives, as opposed to conventional aluminous and silicon carbide abrasives.

5.1 Constitution

Bonded superabrasives have two essential differences from conventional abrasives:

  • given the high price of abrasive (around 10 4 times that of a conventional abrasive), a superabrasive wheel does not contain grains throughout its mass, but is made up of two parts (figure 10 ): an abrasive layer (or belt) and a mount (or backing); only the very small wheels are agglomerated in the mass...
