5. Adhesives for bonding composite materials
Depending on the mechanical, physical and other performances required, the chemical nature of the composite materials and, above all, the resin used as matrix, various chemical types of adhesive can be used.
5.1 Epoxies and modified epoxies
High-performance composites usually comprise an epoxy resin matrix, with various reinforcements: glass, carbon, Kevlar (aramid fibers) or, in the aerospace sector, boron.
For these composites, the immediate choice is to use epoxy resin-based adhesives, which are also the most suitable.
These adhesives have been the most widely used for structural bonding since 1945-1950. This gives us over 50 years' cumulative experience in structural and high-tech fields such as aeronautics...
