 INTRODUCTION

The notion of manufacturing system, although implicitly known for a long time, was not explicitly very well understood, particularly in France, until recently (early nineties in France, late seventies in the USA and Japan). This is evidenced by the fact that the Taylorian division has been retained, even though it was indispensable at the turn of the century, but is highly questionable today.

Not to mention the field of product design, where there is still often a great ignorance of manufacturing processes and methods, we see this lack of understanding in the separation of methods and machine design, tooling departments, layout departments, not to mention manufacturing itself, which is generally not consulted during the design and implementation phase of the manufacturing system.
