1.1 Forestry machining
The most common machine used in forestry is portable. It's the chainsaw (commonly known as the "chainsaw"), used for felling, delimbing, cross-cutting, etc.
The tool is a chain whose links have a cutting edge. The chain is held rigid by a guide bar. The characteristics of the chain are as follows:
the chain length corresponds to the machine and guide on which it fits;
the thickness of the links (the "gauge") is imposed by the guide (from 1.1 to 1.6 mm, and even up to 3.1 mm for the largest harvesting saws);
the chain pitch is imposed by the motor sprocket.
