5. Flash butt welding
5.1 Principle
The butt-welding process, the first form of resistance welding, is used, as its name suggests, to butt-weld bars or sections of the same cross-section, or parts that have been prepared in such a way as to achieve this. Figure 21 shows a typical butt welding operation. The parts are placed in copper jaws, one of which is fixed to a carriage that can be moved parallel to the welding axis.
