5. Influential process parameters

The main objectives of laser melting are to manufacture dense parts (typically with porosity rates of less than 1%) with good mechanical properties, close to the specified dimensions and with a good surface finish. To achieve these objectives, there are many parameters that need to be taken into account. Below is a non-exhaustive list of these different parameters.

5.1 Powder

The thickness of the deposited layers typically ranges from 20 μm for the thinnest to less than 100 μm for the thickest. The grains of the powders used must have a correspondingly fine particle size distribution.
