5. Mechanical properties
Cellulose is the structural polymer that imparts mechanical properties to higher plant cells. However, the mechanical properties of natural fibers are strongly influenced by many factors, including the chemical composition of the fibers and their location within the plant.
Other factors can affect fiber properties, such as plant maturity, soil type and weather conditions.
The presence of microscopic and molecular defects, as well as the separation process, are also factors that influence fiber properties.
The basic idea, to obtain new fibers with improved properties, is to eliminate macroscopic defects by disintegrating natural fibers, and separating highly crystalline fibrils that are practically free of defects.
