4. Precautions

Nanoindentation is a simple technique for determining the mechanical properties of coatings. However, certain precautions must be taken when using it.

The thermal drift of devices must be accurately determined and controlled, as this parameter has a significant influence on the measurement. To do this, the device must be placed in a location where temperature variations are limited. Depending on the type of displacement and force sensor, thermal drift can be measured immediately before the measurement or set as a reference value before the measurement begins.

Given the forces and movements involved, the noise level in the room must be limited and the device must be installed on a system that dampens low frequencies.
