In principle, legal, ethical and technical standards have distinct characteristics, which make them complementary. In particular, we can attempt to differentiate between them in terms of the form they take and the function they fulfil (§ 3.1 ). However, these distinctions are becoming increasingly difficult to make, and normative registers are becoming increasingly intertwined, particularly in the field of nanoscience (§ 3.2
