1. Definition of the concept

Mireille DEFRANCESCHI is a professor of physics, holds a doctorate in physics, and is a research director at the French Atomic Energy Commission.

Aggregates are particles consisting of a limited number of atoms or molecules (hereinafter referred to as components), bound together by various bonds; they range from aggregates composed of two atoms to those containing several hundred atoms.

Note

In the following, the concept of aggregate in geology will be ignored because, despite the similarity in vocabulary, it does not refer to the same concept: rocks are formed from aggregates of various minerals such as quartz and feldspar in granite.
