This article describes the fire protection principles applied by Électricité de France to power plants using pressurized water nuclear reactors, and highlights recent developments in fire protection design and operation that are helping to enhance the safety of nuclear facilities.

It does not cover fire protection for other reactors, such as shipboard reactors, test reactors or sodium-cooled reactors, which pose their own specific problems.
