5. Protecting buildings against natural and man-made hazards
In accordance with the European Utility Requirements (EUR), and in particular the requirements of the Finnish utilities, the plant is designed to withstand natural or man-made external hazards, such as earthquakes, aircraft crashes (military or passenger transport) and pressure waves generated by explosions. One of the plant's design objectives was to locate the systems and components requiring protection against such hazards, in such a way as to minimize the number of buildings required to withstand the resulting loads.
Components and systems that are important to safety or have a high radiological inventory are located in the reactor building, with the exception of emergency diesel units, the two-train closed-circuit cooling water system and the industrial water network.
