1. General Overview

Nuclear fusion (in the Sun as in all stars) is the source of all natural, renewable surface energy on Earth (solar, wind, biomass), with the exception of tidal energy. Half of the supplementary internal heating—the source of geothermal energy—is produced by radioactive decay within the Earth’s mantle and crust. The ultimate outcome of stellar fusion marks the horizon of “the end of days.” Why would we want to generate energy in reactors instead of relying solely on natural renewable sources? Is the sustainability of controlled nuclear fission comparable to that of natural sources?
