The very first condition for sustainable nuclear energy is the absolute necessity of a high level of safety. Public acceptance of this energy depends on it. Safe, responsible management of spent fuel and waste is also essential. The availability of fuel for nuclear reactors and the competitiveness of the kilowatt-hour produced by these reactors in an energy mix that is likely to be different from the one we know today will determine the place of nuclear power in the planet's energy supply in the future. The focus here is on fuel resources and high-level, long-lived waste (HLLW).
