8. Modelling weathering kinetics
Alteration models for nuclear glasses have been proposed since the 1980s. Initially based on a thermodynamic approach to basaltic glasses with properties close to those of nuclear glasses, and for which data are available over timescales of up to several million years, they were then developed to predict the evolution of alteration kinetics, in particular to describe the regime of falling velocity. These models postulated a pilot effect of solution affinity. The effect of the weathering film was then taken into account
