 INTRODUCTION

Low-energy longitudinal vortices can be generated upstream of a laminar boundary layer using small roughness elements. These vortices induce alternating regions of high and low velocity within the boundary layer, which can stabilize the boundary layer and delay its transition to turbulence. If confirmed in practical situations, this effect could lead to significant reductions in viscous drag and hence fuel consumption.
