5. Key points to remember

We've seen how difficult it is to solve certain types of inverse problems when they're badly posed. However, many inverse problems are not poorly posed, but rather poorly conceived or formulated. That's why we've summarized a few important questions that the thermal measurement inverter needs to ask itself right from the start.

5.1 What is the objective? What type of inverse problem is to be solved?

  • Is it a problem of parameter estimation (structural, for example)?

  • Is it a function estimation problem (boundary conditions, for example)?

  • Is it a model reduction problem? In this case, we need to use a detailed reference model for the necessary simulations.
